As many as six new cases of HIV/AIDS have been recorded in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the first four months of 2016.
Director of the HIV/AIDS, STIs program in the Ministry of Health, Ferosa Roache says these 6 new cases recorded during the period January to April 2016, is a reduction when compared to the 23 cases which were recorded for the same period in 2015.
In an interview with WEFM News Tuesday, Ms. Roache said while she welcomed this reduction in the HIV statistics so far for 2016, much more still remains to be done in controlling the transmission of HIV/AIDS in this country.
Ms. Roache said that to date there is a cumulative total of 1,504 cases of HIV/AIDS in this country. This comprises of 913 males, 573 females, and 18 cases of whom the sex was not stated.
She noted that the main mode of HIV transmission here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is through heterosexual relations.
Roache says that at the National AIDS Secretariat they have seen a gradual increase in the number of persons coming forward to access free testing to find out their HIV status.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines recorded its first HIV case in 1984.
